Pumpkins and Halloween Fun

This week, we focused on the life cycle of a pumpkin and Halloween fun!  We even got to decorate and carve our own pumpkins!

Number Writing

Students practiced writing their numbers from one to twenty and we incorporated our pumpkin theme.  They used a black crayon and wrote their numbers in order on a white sheet of construction paper.  The focus was for students to try to write their numbers correctly and in the right order.  Next, we painted pumpkins around our numbers using watercolor paint.  We made sure to put our pumpkins on a vine.

Buddy Activity

Our Veteran's Day assembly is fast approaching.  Our class talked about veterans and how we are recognizing their sacrifice and bravery.  We invited our third grade buddy class into our room to make bookmarks for veterans.  Students used strips of red, white, and blue paper and got very creative with their bookmarks!  The bookmarks will be laminated and given to a group of veterans.  It is just a small way we are saying "thank you" to our veterans for their service to our country.

Check out our beautiful bookmarks!

Scientists Exploring

In science, we got to explore the inside of a pumpkin!  We were all scientists as we reached our hands into the inside of our pumpkins to explore and talk with our friends about what we were noticing.  As I walked around and talked with each group, students said the pulp was cold, squishy, sticky, and wet.  The students were also asked to separate the seeds from the pulp.  We will use the seeds for a math activity at a later date.

Carving Pumpkins

After our investigation of the inside of a pumpkin, students worked together in groups to draw a face on their pumpkins.  They had to think about what kinds of shapes they would use for the face of their pumpkin and the kind of emotion they wanted to show.  Students took turns drawing each part of the face; it was a very collaborative effort!  Our awesome parent helper carved all of the faces for our pumpkins.  Thanks, Mrs. Wheatley!

Here are all of our carved pumpkins!

Halloween

Halloween was a fun-filled day around the building.  There was still a lot of learning and achieving that was done in the morning; in the afternoon, we had some fun wearing our Halloween costumes!  All of the Kindergarten classrooms lead the costume parade around the school.  We walked around the hallways all dressed up, waving and smiling at other students and teachers in their costumes.  We also saw lots of parents and family members who joined in on the fun!

After our fun parade, we went back to our classroom for a very entertaining Halloween party.  Thank you again to all of our families for the items donated for the party and to anyone who was able to stop by and help!  Everyone in our class had a great time!

Getting ready to enjoy a delicious Halloween treat!

Showing off our dance moves to some Halloween music!

Everyone got to hunt for their own prize bags with flashlights!

Here are some students enjoying the bean bag toss game.
